Adoption
Available dogs are listed on our Facebook Page
Our process for adoption is a very careful one. We want to ensure the best possible match for the dogs in our care and for the adoptive family.
To ensure our dogs land in the right place, we ask that people submit an application first for the individual dog they are interested in. We then conduct a phone interview with potential adopters who seem like a good fit. If this call goes well, we will then set up a visit for the potential adopter to meet the dog.
Please note: we do not currently have our adoptable dogs posted on the website, all our dogs are posted on our Facebook group. If you don't have access to Facebook but you are looking for a particular kind of dog, please email us with a bit of information about your lifestyle and what you are looking for and we can forward you some dogs that may fit the bill along with an application. We hope to eventually be able to keep our website up to date with adoptable dogs.

How do I apply to adopt a dog from K9SS?
Please make sure you have read the dog’s profile in its entirety and do some research on the breed(s) of the dog you are considering. Make sure the dog will suit your home and lifestyle. If you wish to proceed please submit an adoption inquiry below (or message us on Facebook) to request an adoption application. Be very thorough in filling out your application. The more we can learn about your family, home, and past pet ownership the better. Also, be honest with yourself. Do not apply for a high-energy dog if you are not already a very active person. A dog will enhance your life and be a willing partner in your activities but a dog will not change who you fundamentally are. A perfect match will be a dog that suits your current lifestyle and activity level.

What is included in the adoption fee?
All K9SS dogs that arrive in our care (over 6 months of age) are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, 4Dx (heartworm) tested, dewormed, and started on flea/tick/heartworm prevention prior to adoption. Many of our adult dogs arrive requiring dental surgeries which we also provide prior to adoption.
Puppies (under 6 months) are vaccinated with age appropriate vaccines, health check, started on flea/tick/heartworm prevention, deworming and go home on a strict spay/neuter contract.
We disclose any medical issues that we may discover prior to adoption so that you are aware of any short or long-term treatments/ailments that may be required.

What are the steps for adoption?
Upon receiving your application an Adoption Coordinator will speak with your veterinarian (if applicable) so please place a call to your vet advising them to expect our call and authorizing them to speak to us about your veterinary history.
We request photos or a video tour of the home and yard areas to ensure it is a safe and secure environment for the adopted dog. Some of our dogs do require fenced in yards as they are considered flight risks, while others do not. Each dogs individual adoption requirements will be outlined in their 'bio'.
An Adoption Coordinator will contact you to set up a phone interview to discuss your application and the dog further. Should everything go well we would ask that you contact your references and advise them to expect a call from us.
The final step is a meet and greet with the dog at the foster’s home where you can see the dog in an environment where it is comfortable and at ease. The foster will be able to answer any questions on the dog’s behavior, training and routine and you can make the decision if this is truly the dog for you.
Through this procedure we may determine that the dog you applied for is not a good match and we may make suggestions on dogs in our program that would be a better fit for your home. Adopting a dog is a huge decision and we want to ensure it is the right match for the dog and the family. We can also keep your application on file for future dogs that may be a good match.
Should your application prove successful we ask for the adoption donation made payable by cash or e-transfer. This fee helps offset the costs of veterinary care, upkeep, grooming and transportation for our dogs and is only a small fraction of the total cost spent on each dog in our rescue program.
